To see a practical demonstration of how Docear functions as an open-source tool for literature organization and research productivity, check out the following introductory video: Docear Teaser Video (2013-08-07; ~6:30 mins) DocearTube YouTube · 7 Oct 2013
Docear is an open-source “Academic Literature Suite” that uniquely integrates PDF annotation extraction, mind mapping, and reference management into a single, cohesive workflow. Unlike traditional reference managers like Zotero or Mendeley that organize papers in rigid lists, Docear relies on visual mind maps to let researchers structure individual concepts, quotes, and files simultaneously. 1. Literature Management & Workspace Setup
Docear uses a structured workspace to track your local academic files and bibliographic information automatically.
Monitored Folders: You define a local folder (your “Literature Repository”) where you store all downloaded research PDFs.
The BibTeX Foundation: Docear embeds JabRef directly into its interface. Every time you add a paper, its bibliographic metadata (authors, journal, year) is saved in a standard .bib file.
Automatic Sorting: When you press the Reload icon on your master mind map, Docear scans your monitored folder and brings all new PDFs into an “Incoming” node. 2. Mind Mapping as Your Core Interface
Instead of relying on tags or static folders, you interact with your entire library through an expansive interactive mind map. User Manual – Docear
