AVStoMPEG is a legacy, open-source video conversion utility primarily active in the mid-2000s. It functions as a Graphical User Interface (GUI) wrapper designed to automate the process of converting various video formats into DVD-compliant MPEG formats. Core Technology & Architecture

Instead of handling the heavy lifting itself, AVStoMPEG acts as a frontend controller that bridges two primary external video tools:

AviSynth: Used for the backend processing. It intercepts video files, allowing users to apply custom video filters, crop frames, and trim clips without needing to create massive temporary video files.

HC-Encoder (HCEnc) / Cinema Craft Encoder (CCE): The system feeds the AviSynth scripts directly into these high-quality MPEG-2 video encoders to generate the final compliant video stream. Current Status Obsolete: Development on AVStoMPEG stopped many years ago.

Modern Successor: If you need a tool that functions similarly but supports modern Windows operating systems, you should use AVStoDVD. AVStoDVD is built on the same core logic—using AviSynth and HCEnc—but is updated to handle modern file containers, audio tracks, and internal DVD menu building.
